For Erró, the history of art constitutes an inexhaustible treasure of representations that are still relevant today. Countless and varied are the famous or little-known works diverted by the Icelandic artist, based in Paris since 1958.

Already in Florence, where he set up his first workshop, he incorporated into his paintings motifs borrowed from illustrious predecessors, ancient or contemporary.

Later, in his collages and collage paintings, he likes to interweave artistic quotations or to confront them with images from popular culture. Historical conventions and cultural hierarchies are set aside in favor of a subjective, joyful and insolent approach to art. Here, Erró introduces Disney characters into paintings by Picasso or El Greco; he connects American astronauts with nudes by Ingres or Goya.

In a series entitled “History of Art”, he pays homage to the great masters of modernity (Léger, Matisse, Picasso, Otto Dix, etc.) with large accumulative works developed from dozens of visual quotations specific to each artist.

The exhibition, thanks to loans from the Reykjavik City Art Museum, aims to reflect the diversity of artistic images appropriated by Erró and the variety of montages and thematic contexts in which they fit.
